Managing nature's potential

At Croppings plants are the focus of attention!

Croppings is an engineering firm that focuses on a clear understanding and optimisation of plant production processes. Our handling methods are easy: we ignore tradition and fixed ideas on growing and management and base our findings on facts and figures. These facts and figures have been incorporated into mathematical growing models. Our knowledge of crops combined with these growing models are the starting point for all potential questions.

Croppings carries out research and advises and assists clients in all situations where fundamental plant knowledge is important – growing, breeding, calculating, investing, automating, marketing, managing etc. The answers may be somewhat surprising to our clients whilst to us they are the obvious results of scientific calculations. Our approach creates novel insights and solutions for each customer and also occasionally in such areas as new crop management programmes for widescale applications.

Getting out what is inside!

There are a number of reasons prompting us to influence the crop-growing process. And a certain number of ways to actually achieve this. Only a small part of the available knowledge is applied in practice, however, and this does not always concern really efficient and effective measures. Definitely getting out what is inside means using the plant's potential to the full - having ‘green fingers' is just not enough. Croppings' growing models are the result of extensive research into the cultivation of cut flowers, bedding plants, vegetables and fruit. Crops have been measured on hundreds of experimental fields both inside and outside the Netherlands on behalf of Croppings engineers and customers. This included reports on fresh weight, dry matter content, quantities and speed of development. Concrete results have been extracted from this wealth of data that underlie the Croppings computerised growing models. Based on the goal sought, we combine these growing models with our calculation models in such areas as energy, employment, market influence and so on. We can thus calculate many operational, tactical and strategic options. We discover what can and cannot be done and we become familiar with the causes and consequences. In short, well-reasoned and truly responsible choices can be made.

How can I harvest 80 tons of apples per hectare and how can I predict and enhance shelf stability?

Nature is doing its job, Croppings is lending a hand

Developments in the plant production industry increasingly seek ‘quality per square centimetre.' This necessitates taking advantage of the crop's full potential, of what is naturally inside a plant. Croppings' daily task is to discover crop capabilities. Can it be larger, tastier, cheaper, more beautiful, faster, with a better shelf-life and more predictable? Can it be produced differently? More efficiently?

We would like to automate taking cuttings. What is the ideal cutting and how can I produce it all year round?

Better, more efficient, more profitable!

Croppings is asked a huge variety of questions by customers who approach us. They range from "Which plant parameters are important for this automation project" and "Why does this house plant not do well under assimilation light?" to "What is the depreciation period for this cropping system?" and "Is this a realistic business plan?". We work for production-oriented companies and other peripheral companies like breeders, suppliers, automation companies, banks, supermarket chains, insurance companies, cooperatives and advice and research agencies. We occasionally organise group meetings for customers in workshops to solve common problem areas together.

How can I produce a uniform product all year round and which type of cultivation gives the highest yields?

Balance and simplicity!

Croppings engineers are practice-oriented scientists and experts who share a passion of understanding plant production processes thoroughly. We also have a broad view of entrepreneurship and practical international experience spread over many years. Croppings stands for creativity and entrepreneurship associated with scientific knowledge and seriousness. For innovation, balance and simplicity. Just like nature itself.

I want to produce twice as many strawberries per square metre. How can I achieve this?
